The Plumb Lounge Chair is the second project created for a sustainable furniture design course at Iowa State. The goal was to create a piece of furniture using readily available waste streams. I used 3″ and 4″ PVC cutoffs for the legs and back rest. The seat was created by cutting a 6″ PVC pipe lengthwise, heating it in an oven until pliable, flattening and shaping, then curling the front and rear edges. The round end caps are turned from scrap construction lumber. The chair is held together with furniture nuts and threaded rod, eliminating the need for adhesives.
