This project helped me decide pursue a design degree. I was working for a company that uses PVC pipe for ventilation systems. I was inside a dark attic on a particularly sunny day and noticed that the PVC pipe poking through the roof transmitted a pleasant yellow-orange glow from the sunlight shining through. The company had no use for short pipe cutoffs, so I began saving the cutoffs and experimenting with turning PVC on a a lathe in my free time. After many iterations, I wound up with minimalist table lamp ideal for a nightstand or living room mood light. I have sold a few dozen Plumb lamps, and managed to reduce production time to under five hours.
